Friends, I am looking to lend my expertise to other companies, having ended my last engagement.
My main focus is empowering teams to become more effective and fulfilled. I have done so through various roles, including Software Engineering Manager and Agile Coach, and am open to both.
I have been on the Board of Directors of Agile New England, a community-focused not-for-profit group focused on promoting agile and lean, for about 10 years, and a member for 15, driving/contributing to agile and digital transformations of companies. My technical background means I can implement actionable changes in practices, processes, and tools to increase agility, specifically tailored for the situation.
My decade of leadership experience focuses on empowering teams, including all voices, to find the best ideas and get to the true nature of impediments to happy and effective teams. I didn’t just rise to management; I have a degree in it, and leadership has been my goal throughout my career. I have extensive experience in the technical and organizational sides of software team management, and success in turning around ineffective and disgruntled teams. My technical background and R&D experience supports deep involvement in the technologies and their use, quality best practices, and troubleshooting.

It’s easy to say that many skills are like riding a bicycle; that you never forget them, and can just start using them again after a long period of disuse. It’s a lot harder to actually do it. This is especially true when you try to keep track of several closely related skills. For instance, I’ve learned so many computer programming languages, that when I need to learn a new one, it’s faster to see how it’s different than one I already know than to try to learn the language itself. I’m sure the same is true of other fields.
When “Jacks of all trades” (I hate the term “generalist”) like myself job hunt, there’s usually a list of possible technologies and environments we’re willing to work in, so we can’t afford to just keep up on Java, or Perl, or PHP, or .NET. We not only need to keep sharp on all of these, but we need to keep track in our heads which is which (after all many programming languages are very similar). No matter how long you’ve used a skill, a few months of unemployment can blur the details. In this post I plan to cover some helpful techniques for being ready for the technical interview or test without flipping through 300-page books each time. I will not be addressing mastering new skills, because that is an entirely different activity. Some of them may be specific to software development, but I hope there are parallels in other areas.
Like many job hunting activities, you shouldn’t wait until you’re job hunting to start doing them. After all, you want to keep marketable on skills you’re not currently using at your current job, right?
Time management for job hunters is tricky. On the one hand, many career counselors will tell you that finding a job is now your full-time job you should be spending 40 hours a week on. On the other hand, once you’ve exhausted the low-hanging fruit, you’ll be hard-pressed to find 8 hours of productive activities a day. It goes without saying that trying to do nothing else all day would lead most people to deep depression and/or anxiety Imagine spending 40 hours a week trying to find a date. Finding a balance and prioritizing are the key.
Working on your job search is great, but not if you’re really doing busy work. Focus on high-value activities when you’re working, focus on high-fun activities when you’re playing, and you’ll be much happier. And above all else, be honest with yourself which one you’re doing 😉 It’s essential to plan relaxation time in the day, because depressed interviewees don’t become employees.
I am starting a new series of posts on news and advice for both job seekers and employers. This has been a hot topic for me for a long time, and my continued unemployment has made it even hotter. I am involved with several unemployment support and networking groups, most notably WIND Networking (who I highly recommend). I have studied job hunting like a science, and have learned many lessons from my own process, and from listening to others. I don’t claim any special training in this area, but I have studied it for a long time, and what I do works well for me. Years ago I had a series of pages on my old website about job hunting, but when I started porting it over to my new website, I found some of the information dated. I will certainly copy over some of the content, but I think posting articles on topics will be more helpful than creating static pages again. This article is on starting your job hunt. There are several steps you should take once you “have gained increased daytime freedom”. I cannot stress enough, though, that much of this you should be thinking about before you lose your job. I will be driving that point on several of these suggestions.

I have been a hands-on Manager, a Team Lead, and a Principal Software Engineer. I’m looking for a full-time position in the Greater Boston area (but not downtown Boston) developing Java, preferably in an Agile environment. I have extensive experience in software design and development, as well as hands-on management.
