No, alcohol isn’t involved this time. These are military robots. Lots of ’em. All different kinds. According to this article on Network World, the Marines are looking for, among other things, robots that weigh 10 pounds or less and can be litterally tossed into battle for reconnaissance or other support operations. They’re looking to other types of robots (some of which already exist as prototypes) to carry gear, assist with communications, and actually fight.
I’m sure there are readers out there who feel that this is a bad thing, because we’re using technology to kill more people. I have been involved with similar defence contract work for years, and nothing could be further from the truth. The biggest problem facing our military efforts these days is that the battlefield is now in urban areas, and minimizing collateral damage to civilians is getting much harder. The war efforts are not going away, but any tools we can use to identify the enemy forces from the civilians, or identify buildings used by the enemy forces among the houses and retail and religous locations, the fewer people will be killed, or at least the fewer innocent people. I welcome dissenting opinions, but that has been my experience.
